What is WebM?
An open, royalty-free container built for the web, normally holding VP9 or AV1 video with Opus audio. Google developed it and uses it as YouTube's primary delivery format, which is why so many rows in the format table are WebM.
Is WebM better than MP4?
At equal visual quality VP9 in WebM is typically 20–30% smaller than H.264 in MP4, so it wins on size and bandwidth. MP4 with H.264 wins on compatibility - it plays on essentially everything ever made. Choose by where the file is going.
What plays WebM files?
Every current desktop and mobile browser, VLC, MPV, and recent versions of Windows 11 and Android. What often cannot: QuickTime on macOS, older smart TVs, most video editors without a plugin, and some car head units.
Can I convert WebM to MP4 afterwards?
You can, but it means a lossy re-encode that costs quality and time. If you know you need MP4, download the MP4 row in the first place rather than converting - the table lists both.
Does WebM support 4K?
Yes, and above 1080p it is often the only option. YouTube uses VP9 and AV1 for high-resolution masters, so 1440p and 2160p rows are frequently WebM only.
Why is the audio in WebM called Opus?
Opus is the audio codec WebM normally carries. It is genuinely excellent - at around 130 kbps it is regarded as transparent for most listeners, which is better than an MP3 at the same bitrate.
