Every audio stream a video has, listed.

Not just MP3. YouTube stores several parallel audio tracks per video at different codecs and bitrates - this shows you all of them so you can match the file to where it is going to be played.

Procedure

How it works

  1. 01

    Paste any video URL

Music, podcasts, lectures, live replays and Shorts all carry audio streams.

  2. 02

    Match format to device

M4A for Apple hardware and car stereos; Opus for the best quality per byte.

  3. 03

    Download instantly

Audio-only streams never need merging, so they come straight from YouTube.

FAQ

Choosing an audio format

Three codecs, different strengths. How to pick without guessing.

What is the difference between M4A and Opus?
M4A holds AAC audio, which Apple devices, car stereos and virtually every consumer player support natively. Opus is newer, sounds slightly better at the same bitrate, and lives in a WebM container - but support outside browsers, VLC and Android is patchier. Pick M4A for compatibility, Opus for efficiency.
Which one should I put on my phone?
M4A on an iPhone, because iOS handles AAC everywhere including the Files app, Apple Music and CarPlay. On Android either works, though M4A is the safer choice if you use a third-party music player or sync to a car.
Why are there low-bitrate options like 49 kbps?
YouTube generates them for slow connections. They are genuinely useful for spoken-word content - a two-hour podcast at 49 kbps is around 40 MB instead of 115 MB, and speech intelligibility barely suffers. For music they are noticeably poor.
Do downloaded files include the artist and title tags?
No. The streams come from YouTube without ID3 metadata, so your player will usually show the filename rather than a track name. Tools like MusicBrainz Picard or Mp3tag can add tags afterwards if you need a tidy library.
Can I extract audio from a live stream?
Once the stream has ended and YouTube has published the replay, yes - it behaves like any other video. A stream that is still running or a premiere that has not started cannot be downloaded, and you will get a message saying so.
Does video resolution affect audio quality?
No. Audio and video are stored as independent streams, so the audio attached to a 360p playback is byte-for-byte the same as the audio attached to 4K. You never need to download a large video to get the best sound.
