Why an Instagram Reel Won't Download: Public vs Private Posts

Published

The short answer

A reel that won't download almost always fails for one of four reasons: the account is private, the post was removed, Instagram is asking for a login, or the request is being limited for the moment. Only the last one clears up by itself.

What our tool can and can't download

Our Instagram reels downloader works on public reels and public video posts. It never asks you to log in and never uses an Instagram account. That one rule explains most failures: if you can't open a post in a private browser window while signed out, a tool that doesn't log in can't open it either.

What it supports:

  • Public reels
  • Public video posts, including older video links that contain /tv/

What it does not support:

  • Posts from private accounts
  • Stories and highlights
  • Profiles and tag pages
  • Photo-only posts
  • Short redirect links that start with instagram.com/share/

If a post contains several photos or videos, the tool downloads the first item only. When that first item is a photo, you get a message that the post has no video.

Why a public reel can still fail

It was deleted or changed. The creator removed it, made the account private, or restricted who can view it.

Instagram asks for a login. Instagram can ask for a login even on posts that look public, especially for requests that come from servers instead of phones. The tool then tells you the post isn't available without logging in, or that Instagram is limiting our server.

A temporary limit. If Instagram starts rejecting many requests in a short time, we may pause Instagram downloads for a few minutes. Try again shortly.

The wrong kind of link. A story, a profile or a share link is not a reel, so it is rejected before anything is downloaded.

How to copy the right link

Open the reel in the Instagram app or on instagram.com, tap Share, then Copy link.

The copied link may end with tracking text such as ?utm_source=.... That's normal. Our tool removes it and never stores it.

If your link starts with instagram.com/share/, open it in a browser first. The address bar usually changes to the normal form that contains /reel/ or /p/. Copy that address instead.

What you get

In our own test, a short reel came out as an MP4 of roughly 2 MB. Instagram stores a reel's picture and sound as separate streams, and the tool joins them into one file. Quality depends on what the creator uploaded.

Rights and privacy

A reel belongs to the person who made it. Keeping a copy for yourself is one thing. Reposting or reusing it is another, and our guide to whether downloading is legal explains where the lines sit. For how we handle links and files, see our privacy policy.

Never give your Instagram password or session cookies to any download site. A tool that asks for them to fetch a public reel is a warning sign.

FAQ

Questions about this article

Can I download Instagram stories or highlights?
No. This tool only handles public reels and public video posts, and it never logs in, so stories, highlights and anything from private accounts are out of scope.
Why does it say the post isn’t available without logging in?
Either the post isn’t truly public, or Instagram is limiting requests from our server for the moment. Check that you can open the link in a private window while signed out, then try again in a few minutes.
What happens with a post that has several photos and videos?
We download the first item. If that first item is a photo, you’ll see a message that the post has no video.
Do I need to give you my Instagram login?
No. The tool never asks for a password or cookies, and you should never share them with any download site.
Is the file kept on your server?
The file is created temporarily so your browser can save it, and it’s removed afterwards. See the privacy policy for the details.
